Here's another reason our kids are amazing. I tell my daughter she can be/do anything she can dream of. She just has to tell herself she can.
So this High School student has made a huge discovery that could change the whole world.
18 year old Mia Heller from Warrington, Virginia, invented a water filtration system that eliminates 95.52% of microplastics. This could be huge with water efforts for clean drinking water in places that don't have clean water.
Her device uses magnetic ferrofluid to bind microplastic particles in a three-module system about the size of a flour bag. It requires minimal maintenance compared to traditional membrane systems. Heller developed the solution after watching her mother constantly replace expensive filter membranes at home.
So what does she get for her findings? She'll get finalist status at the 2025 Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair plus a $500 Patent & Trademark Office Society award.
I always say it, but this proves the point. Kids are amazing. They really can change the world.
